The Auvergne has a different character to the other areas of France. The volcano that formed this area thousands of years ago has given it its uniek characteristics. It is now possible to admire the crater lakes, climb to the top of the old ‘Puys’ (volcanic plugs left exposed by erosion), and enjoy the magnificent panoramas. Many rivers have their source here and hot springs well up.
Apart from the nature there is much more to see and experience here. Middle Age villages and many festivals make the Auvergne an attractive holiday destination. Sport fishers will find ample oppurtunity for their hobby around Marcillat en Combraille. A large fishing lake, stocked with carp, trout, grayling, barbel and chub is situated 3 km. from Maison LÓie. In the village you can hire tennis courts, and 2 km. away you will find a mini golf course. There are diverse cycle and hiking routes in the immediate area. A canoeing center can be found 20 km. away.
The summer months are filled with street festivals and pleasant flea markets where you can rummage to your heart’s content. There is one nearby every Sunday. You can also explore the region by car or motor bike. Tip: take a picnic basket with you.
